The TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball offers all round performance for mid to high handicappers

As golf enthusiasts, we’re always on the lookout for that perfect ball that combines distance, feel, and spin. The TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball has recently caught our attention, promising a blend of soft feel and impressive performance at a budget-friendly price point. TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls are TaylorMade’s answer to the Srixon Soft Feel and Callaway Supersoft in the mid to high handicapper and beginner golf ball market. In this TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball review we find out whether this golf ball lives up to both its soft feel and ball speed claims.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft Golf Ball Specs

The SpeedSoft is a two piece construction with an Surlyn cover. Compression rating is under 50 which makes it the softest TaylorMade golf ball available.

It’s soft feel and ball speed are powered by TaylorMade’s new PWRCORE technology. On the surface it has a 322 dimple pattern designed for aerodynamic performance.

Available in white, yellow, or high visibility ink if you opt for a speedsoft ink golf ball.

It is targeted at mid to high handicappers with a swing speed less than 85 mph who are looking for a softer feel and good ball speed.

On Course Performance: TaylorMade SpeedSoft Golf Balls

I put this golf ball to the test on back-to-back weekends, playing a total of 36 holes. One round I played with the solid white option and the other was with the distinctive paint splatter design of the orange ink version. Personally I love both the Callaway Supersoft and Srixon Soft Feel so this ball had its work cut out from the outset.

Off the Tee

When it comes to distance off the tee, the SpeedSoft holds its own. While it may not be the longest ball on the market, it certainly doesn’t disappoint. The low compression design offers a great soft feel that gives brilliant feedback on impact. You can feel TaylorMade’s new PwrCore technology at work with the driver, it generates solid ball speeds with my average swing speed and will be great for players with a slow swing speed too.

One notable characteristic is the ball’s tendency to launch slightly higher than expected. I already produce a fairly high launch angle, especially when using a golf ball with compression in this range. This is important to keep in mind, a slightly higher launch angle will certainly help those who have difficulties gaining those extra few yards of elevation and distance. Whereas those who launch it high naturally may find it a bit too much.

Iron Play

The TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball balances soft feel with ball speed

With irons, the SpeedSoft continues to impress. The soft feel is particularly noticeable here, it stays on the clubface for just the right amount of time for a soft feel golf ball. Using this ball gives you a balanced sense of control, confidence and feel, something that the everyday golfer is seeking. While spin rates are generally lower compared to premium tour-level balls, the SpeedSoft still offers enough spin to hold greens effectively for most amateur players.

Around the Green

In the short game, the SpeedSoft’s low compression really shines. The ultra-soft feel provides excellent feedback on chips and pitch shots, allowing for delicate touch around the greens. However, it’s worth noting that generating high spin on these shots might be more challenging compared to higher-compression tour balls. Golfers who rely heavily on spin for their short game may need to adjust their technique slightly.

You can generate some very favorable height with wedges which helps to pull up those shots when needed. However there were a few times where there was just a little too much roll out and I was missing my usual Titleist AVX and it’s softer urethane cover.

On the Putting Green

Putting with the SpeedSoft is a pleasure. The soft feel translates well on the greens, offering a smooth roll and good feedback on impact. Many golfers will appreciate the sense of control this provides, especially on longer putts where distance control is crucial. I found putting with the SpeedSoft ink golf balls a bit of a challenge, reading the roll and at address I was a little distracted with very busy finish.

Feel and Durability

As the name suggests, the standout feature of the SpeedSoft is its incredibly soft feel. With a compression of less than 50, it’s one of the softest balls in TaylorMade’s lineup. This softness is consistent across all shots, from driver to putter. Despite the soft construction, durability doesn’t seem to be an issue, with the ball holding up well through a full round of play.

Visual Technology

For those interested in a bit flair, the TaylorMade SpeedSoft Ink golf ball might be the ball for you. It certainly stands out on the course and will enhance the visual appeal of your golf equipment. The spattered ink design certainly makes it easier to spot on the golf course but it’s not for all. While this might not appeal to traditionalists, it can provide enhanced visibility and potentially offer some alignment benefits for some. The solid white or yellow options are classic TaylorMade designs that most golfers will recognize and appreciate.

I used the standard white version first and I struggled initailly with the ink design, however, after using the ink spatter design the plain version is so boring. If I was to continue using this golf ball I think I’d have to choose the vibrant visual technology of the ink.

Value Proposition

At $25 USD per dozen, the SpeedSoft offers excellent value for money. It delivers performance that rivals the market leaders in the softer feel range, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious golfers or those new to the game who don’t want to break the bank while losing balls.

Conclusion: TaylorMade SpeedSoft Golf Ball Review

The TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball proves that you don’t need to spend top dollar to get solid all-around performance. Its blend of soft feel, decent distance, and adequate spin makes it a versatile option suitable for a wide range of golfers, particularly those with moderate swing speeds. TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls match it with the Srixon Soft Feel and Callaway Supersoft. If you like either of these golf balls you’re sure to enjoy the SpeedSoft.
